Yosemite, finally!

Domani si parte, direzione Yosemite.
Yeah… finalmente vado a vedere uno dei più famosi parchi d’america!
Andrò in compagnia di Michael, un americano che sta facendo il PhD nel laboratorio dove anch’io lavoro.
Abbiamo deciso di andare in tenda e per 4 giorni vivremo l’avventura del parco.
Lo Yosemite è così famoso che arrivano persone da tutti gli stati uniti e anche da fuori. Il campeggio è stato prenotato circa un mese fa ma c’erano così pochi posti disponibili che non siamo riusciti a prenotare la piazzola per due giorni consecutivi. Quindi ogni giorno smonteremo la tenda e cambieremo posto.
Le previsioni del tempo non promettono bene, almeno per domani (Wed 18). Non solo ci sarà la pioggia, ma anche un freddo cane. Domani ci saranno tra i 23 e i 39 gradi Fahrenheit, e quindi convertendo i Celsius ( C=5/9 ( F -32) ) ci saranno tra -5 e +4. Brrrrrrrr….
Poco importa, domani si va allo yosemite e niente mi fermerà!
Da Riverside sono 6 hours driving, forse domani ci fermiamo a vedere le Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias e poi decideremo in loco che hiking fare i prossimi giorni. Scriverò quando torno dove sono stato.

Questo video riassume la differenza che c’è nella mentalità degli americani in Silicon Valley: “Sai come chiamiamo un imprenditore che fallisce qui in Silicon Valley? Esperto”.
Un imprenditore che fallisce è un esperto perchè impara dai suoi errori. Da nessun’altra parte nel mondo un imprenditore che fallisce è visto così.
E cosa dire in italia? La concezione di imprenditore che fallisce è legata alle clamorose storie che finiscono sui giornali in cui gli imprenditori si intascano i soldi dell’azienda e poi fanno fallire l’azienda.
Però quanti invece sono onesti e falliscono? Nessuno perdonerà loro gli sbagli e nessun darà a loro una seconda possibilità!
Forse anche noi dovremo cambiare mentalità!

After I have seen this video, I agree with this thesis. Also for example Google leaves employees work on his own idea for 20% of their time.
Prendere la patente in California costa 31$… e il test scritto lo puoi rifare 3 volte lo stesso giorno!!!

Si è proprio così, con 31$ fai il test scritto e la prova pratica!!!
Premessa: la patente italiana è valida per guidare in California fino a quando sei visitatore. La patente internazionale non serve. Solo se sei residente devi prendere la patente Californiana.
Ok, fatta questa premessa vi racconto come prendere la patente Californiana.
Si va sul sito della DMW che sta per Department of Motor Vehicles e si fissa un appuntamento.
Si può presentarsi anche senza appuntamento ma non lo consiglio, qui perchè.
Una volta che si arriva alla DMW si paga 31$ e si fa il test scritto. Il test consiste in 36 domande a risposta multipla (3 scelte). Per passarlo devi fare meno di 6 errori.
Ma la cosa bella è che il test lo PUOI RIFARE 3 VOLTE NELLO STESSO GIORNO!!! Si proprio così: lo fai una volta, fai più di 6 errori, richiedi di farne un altro, fai ancora più di 6 errori, lo fai un’altra volta! ahahah 
E non solo, ci sono domande completamente assurde tipo:
You are required to wear your safety belt in a moving vehicle unless:
[ ] The vehicle was manufactured before 1975
[ ] You are riding in the back of a pickup/camper
[ ] The vehicle is not equipped with safety belts, such as a bus
Probabilmente devi portarti dietro la cintura di sicurezza…

L’esame pratico è incluso nei 31$ e non serve che andata da qualche scuola guida….
L’esame lo potete farlo con la vostra macchina. L’esaminatore sale con voi e vi fa fare qualche giretto.
Ah, non guidate troppo piano altrimenti vi bocciano!! (frecciatina) Se sbagliate lo potete rifare per 6$.

long time since I wrote last time…

yes, it passed a long time from my last post.
A lot of stuff are changed. I’m still in California until July. I could say: “the american dream goes forward”.
My advisor offered me to stay three more months, so I can my finish my project on Network Coding.
It is a great opportunity and I want to do my best in these three more months.
Currently I am doing simulation with Network Simulator 2. I don’t like it and sometimes it is really tough to understand.
In these three months I also want to visit Yosemite.
Run windows apps on Mac OS X… free!

There is still some application that is not working on mac.
Instead of use virtualization or make a partition on hard disk to install windows, you can first try WineBottler!
WineBottler (http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/) is a free application that opens file .exe as a mac application. You don’t need windows xp/vista/7.
The linux users know the wine project (wine is not an emulator). WineBottler is the same for mac and it is completely free.
You have just to install Wine and WineBottler that you find when you download the dmg.
Then, when you have a file .exe you have just to click on it and wine automatically starts.
You can choose to run or to convert in a mac file (the second option is prefered if you think to use the application more time.)
I used this software with GMATPrep and it works good!
Most of the software to prepare standard exam (GMAT, TOEFL) have only the .exe. So WineBottler can be a usefull tools.
You can also install some windows software that is included in WineBottler in the “Install Predefined Prefixes”.
I installed Internet Explorer 8, and it works great! I am not going to use ie8 instead of my chrome 
but if you need to check a website that you are building…
